MTL Finland: Leading Trade Industry Body for Ad & Communication Agencies

The membership is 100 agencies catering for over 1500 employees, or more than 50 % of the industry volume represented, including all major traditional and other agencies.

The chairman of the board is Jari-Pekka Rautamaa.

Activities are performed in four major operative areas: 1) Influencing the Operating Environment, 2) Customer Work, 3) Competitiveness Development and 4) Membership.

A lot of the public affairs projects are conducted jointly with other industry bodies, often in the framework of the Finnish Ad Council, which is chaired by MTL 2007-2008. 

Main research projects conducted regularly by MTL are 1) Marketing Communications Expert Services Market (annual), 2) MTL-Barometer (four times a year, also Nordic), 3) MTL-Customer Survey (annual). Recent ad hoc studies have been conducted on internationalization of the industry and on the competence and skill needs of the industry.

Regular research projects where MTL contributes significantly are 1) Finnish Marketing Communications Expenditure, jointly within the Finnish Ad Council (annual), 2) Finnish Readership Survey, by Levikintarkastus (annual), 3) Finnish TV meter, by Finnpanel (continuous), 4) Finnish Radio Ratings, by Finnpanel (monthly).

MTL is a member of the European Association of Commercial Communications EACA as well as the international PR body ICCO.

Main competitions arranged are Effie Awards Finland and Kultasulka competition. MTL represents Clio and Golden Drum in Finland. 

The biggest annual event is the Marketing Communications Week at the end of October, at several cities throughout Finland. The main event for professionals in Helsinki had 2,000 attendees in four seminars and Helsinki Ad Film Festival in 2007, organized jointly with Wanha Satama Trade Fair. MTL also runs popular current topic training seminars, lately eg. on Facebook and online videos. An excursion to Cannes Lions Festival is organized in June annually.

MTL also has a fully-owned commercial arm, MTL-Palvelut Oy (MTL Services Ltd), which publishes the trade magazine, Maine. Maine has a circulation of 8,000 copies with readership of 14,000 and is the single magazine in Finland having a 100 % coverage of media agency employees. The managing director of the company is Anne Mehtäläinen with business director Leila Reponen running day-to-day business. The editor-in-chief of Maine is Pekka Virolainen.
